Sorcerer’s Conquest‘s release date has been moved up due to editing scheduling conflicts. (My sincerest apologies.)

In the meantime, it’s been a grilled cheese and tomato soup kind of week. (Comfort food, here I come!)

In the meantime, here’s a sneak peak that will hopefully tide you over until the book is released in March 2018. (I so loved writing this book!)

Sorcerer’s Conquest Excerpt

Sorcerer's Conquest eBook Cover 3-10-18 300dpiHeedless of the growing shadows as dusk grayed into night, Maddox Chadwick, sorcerer, paced at the top of a mountain.

A few nights ago at the end of the gathering, he and his fellow knights set out to perform their final tasks to earn their freedom, and yet a sense of restlessness, of expectation, lured Maddox back to the same spot on this spring evening.

Anticipation bolstered his stride, as if he returned once again after a fifteen-hundred-year hiatus, to a grand stage. Long ago, Maddox left the world of thievery and thespian pursuits behind to join twelve others to protect Camelot against underworld forces.

Now, drawn to this area in East Tennessee by the power housed within the mountains, their tenure as Dark Knights would soon to an end.

A line of mostly stone layered the ridgetop. Stunted cedar and pine trees sprouted close to the summit and blended in with oaks and other foliage along the steep, downward slopes. The breeze stirred through the evergreens and tickled his nostrils, and magic thrummed through the crystals in the ground beneath him.

Pale and muted, a halfmoon glowed through thickening clouds, casting long shadows and turning the trees into twisted, sinister shapes.

As stated in the ancient prophecy, he sought release from his knightly duties. Yet, he, a sorcerer of Merlin’s ilk, did not know where to look.

While the others possessed the knowledge of their last knightly tasks, Maddox walked back and forth. Owls hooted and crickets chirred to jeer his performance. For good reason, because like an actor without direction, he strode along a ridgeline in search of the unknown.

The weight of foreboding pressed on his shoulders, at odds with the growing anticipation. Maddox frowned, trying to make sense of it.

In honor of the upcoming supermoon, he manifested the image of an orb, mimicking it exactly. Held within the space between his cupped hands, the glow illuminated a pit that once held a large chunk of crystal. But even the conjuring in a world long devoid of magic failed to excite him.

Nothing much did anymore, not since the price of his sorcery featured centuries of celibacy no man should be forced to endure.

In addition, he had no idea what ancient artifact he was meant to retrieve, and no clue why he’d been drawn here to this particular place at this specific time. But whatever demanded his attention and scrutiny had everything to do with him being upon this ridge on this night.

Movement along the tree line caught his attention and Gideon Saint-Valeri, the cur of a wolf shifter, staggered into view and dropped to his knees. No longer a handsome knight or even a noble wolf, the creature before him bore a monstrous visage of an elongated snout  with  sharp uneven teeth gleaming below a fur-covered forehead of a more human slant.

Back hunched, the deformed Dark Knight carried a brown-haired, unconscious woman cradled tight to his chest.

Tasting cedar and pine as he inhaled, Maddox quirked his upper lip. Within his leather jacket, he shrugged as if to dislodge the weight of this strange night from his shoulders.

When the second-in-command raised his face wetness marred the disfigured cheeks. “She dies.” The werewolf shook his head and spoke in a low guttural tone. “And I have killed her.”

Maddox blinked at the sight of his tears. Never had he have imagined seeing such agony and grief on the arrogant, dutybound shifter’s face.

“We cannot tarry. We must return to the woods.” A woman, with hair too light for brown and too dark for red, stumbled from the lower slope, panting as she stopped beside the afflicted knight. “Time runs out.”

At the sight of her, a strange slowness shuttered Maddox’s hearing and reactions. His fingers automatically curled toward his palm, yet he hesitated in making the gesture that would freeze the woman in place.

Could it be?

Wolf’s Pursuit Excerpt

WP eBook Cover 5-9-18 UPDATE 350dpiThe wolf twitched his ears to the side and back, then forward once again. He strained to catch the shuffle of movement within the sounds of cricket chirrs, barred owl hoots, and the rattle of leaves in a light spring breeze. Belly-crawling through the brush, his curious sniffs took in evergreen, wild grass, moss scents, squirrel and crow odors, and the savory musk of nearby humans.

In the nighttime chill, his nose quivered.

The woman he stalked smelled of an unlikely, confusing mix of deer, fox, falcon, and even the scent of wild wolves.

From a natural born pack. Not his kind.

Sometimes, being a lone wolf shifter tended toward a lonely existence. Today, that wide-divide between himself, human nature, and true creatures of the wild spanned like a huge abyss in his chest.

Eyes narrowed, he licked his jowls and snout, tasting the air. Around him, darkness thrummed with unexpected excitement that flavored sharp. His whiskers quivered, and the hair raised on his back between his shoulder blades and along his rear haunches because the East Tennessee woods held another threat.

In wolf form, as Gideon Saint-Valeri tracked his potential mate, someone else pursued him. For a moment, he switched his attention to the human who trailed him.

Not one of the local coven, but another. Female, as well. Since the woman, one not magic born from her scent, sought him, perhaps that meant his fated mate was not a witch or sorceress after all.

After fifteen hundred years, the possibility of being with a human, perhaps even as a mortal once more, pleased him. His yearning to connect with mankind again had little to do with his protective wolf nature or his long-dormant sexual urges.

Or the lack thereof.

As the stranger who tracked him neared, he growled low. More of a warning to himself to not let his guard down, but not loud enough for the human ear to perceive from a distance.

Upon the waxing crescent moon, Gideon must find the fist-sized ruby that once adorned the tip of Merlin’s staff and get on the road. With the full of the Mage’s Moon, in two weeks hence, his tenure as a Dark Knight ended.

What awaited him? Might he regain his humanity? The hope of normalcy after far too long made him draw in a deep breath. But it might mean—

Wolf’s tail drooped, and he lowered his head.

If his time of being a shifter drew to a close, he might lose the wolf part of himself.
He exhaled the once uplifting breath until a heaviness weighed in his chest. If his new life meant he wore a tie and used his legal degree in a courtroom to put human scum behind bars and to weed out the chaff of demons hidden among mankind, then so be it.

After centuries upon centuries of extraordinary, Gideon welcomed and looked forward to low-key and mundane.

In the meantime, the thought of being yoked to someone with supernatural abilities caged him in a way his inner wolf resisted. Wolf lifted his snout toward the sky against a phantom weight. Before the turning, Gideon had been as randy as they come, but was it worth it to be able to have sex again, yet be chained or on a leash, so to speak—

Movement shifted, and down below, the woman lifted an arm and set a falcon to flight.

Dark hair chopped short, she held herself with the agile grace of a warrior. The baggy, masculine clothing failed to hide the full curves of her breasts, hips, and shapely arse.

Not one lick of interest, even in Wolf’s guardian make up, stirred. Which meant that the animal whisperer was not his chosen.

Damn.

Wolf rested his chin on moss and whined once again.

The woman, gifted with the ability to communicate and commune with creatures of all kinds, frigging had to be the one.

But no.

Damnation to the nth degree.

Betrayed by the so-called great sorcerer and then cursed by a spell that caused him agony right after his turning, Gideon wanted nothing to do with a wielder of magic.

But now, just as Merlin had turned on him and his fellow knights long ago, fate twisted the dagger of reality in its cruel hand.

The possibility of courting a sorceress or a witch. Not flipping cool at all.

Meet Touch Healer Jess Willowbrook

VQ eBook Cover 5-9-18 UPDATE 350dpiLike the guilt that ground deep in her stomach, road pavement pressed into Jess’s legs through the knees of her jeans. As the sun rose, she continued to hover over the still motorcycle rider.

Shock hit her, and her body chilled far colder than the spring weather warranted. How? Why? Disbelief that she had run out in front of a motorcycle bearing down on her coursed through her. Gasoline and road tar stench fumed the area and half-gagged her.

“No, no, no. I can’t believe this is happening.”

In gentle pats, she touched the injured man’s shoulders and arms through the leather of his torn jacket. She gently stroked the back of his gloved hand. After a moment, her nursing experience and innate urge to heal kicked in, and she yanked off his glove and tossed it aside. Despite her fatigue from the use of her ability and her flight through the woods, she pushed herself to help him. Her insides quivered, and she struggled to slow her breathing.

“Focus. I have to focus.”

With her shadow spreading over him, Jess scrubbed her palms down the thighs of her blue jeans, then wiped her hands on her long, deep-green blouse tail.

The best she could do, considering the severity of the situation and that one of her attackers took her backpack. She bent over him and took his hand.

From the angle of his lower leg, he suffered broken bones.

The realization of the extent of his injuries throbbed in her temples.

Downhill, an explosion boomed. If only the bike blowing apart took care of the three jerks who’d been chasing her. Not really hurt them exactly, but, well, at least scared them off and made them leave her alone.

A ball of flame tossed metal parts into the air. Oily gasoline smoke churned toward the pale blue sky in slick black rolls. Jagged metal pieces rained down in splats through the trees. If they were lucky, the men who chased her were okay and hadn’t been hit by the wreckage.

She was a healer. Not a fighter.

Yes, the bad guys chased her, but still, how could she have been so careless to run out in front of a motorcycle, lack of headlight or not? Worried out of her mind about the injured boy and the men who were after her, she hadn’t even registered the roar of the motor.

All her focus had been to get the creeps away from the child.

“Dang, dang, dang.” Shaking her head after failing to swallow, she turned her full attention to the man. “I’m so, so sorry. You did your best to not run me over. For that I’m thankful.” With trembling fingers, she clasped his hand.

Injuries? First, through her touch, she perceived his right leg was broken. A crushed knee twisted, and the lower leg jutted off to one side.

With a glance at the canted angle, she flinched. Nope, a normal leg wasn’t supposed to bend at that angle.

“Poor fellow.” The stirring in her belly turned into a dull ache. “I hope with all my heart you’ll be able to forgive me.”

Next, she used her knowledge and experience to delve into the twisted fracture of his lower arm halfway between his elbow and wrist. When she reached his neck with her mental scan, still holding his hand, she sat up straight.

Spinal injury. Not impossible to fix, but a challenge.

Then she probed for any harm to his brain and heart.

Awareness crawled over her scalp like a thousand beetle bugs. The perceptions she received through her touch… Never had she received such obscure, unusual readings. They told her that with such a high red blood cell count, the man’s blood would flow like sludge.

The workings of his brain, the amount of hormones in his system, blood chemistry—

Jess yanked her hand away. His hand flopped, and his knuckles knocked against the asphalt. She thought better of leaving his bare hand on the pavement, and retrieved the glove, wedging it underneath his fingers like a mini pillow.

Never in all her twenty-eight years had she encountered such. How was this possible?

While she did a mental tally of the impressions she received from her touch, her not-so-usually bold glance skimmed over the front of his jeans. Yes, all the parts, organs, and appendages were in the right place. Cheeks flushed, she again shook her head. Her modern nursing degree told her what she sensed was reality. “It’s not possible.”

Thunder barely sounded above the light rustle of the trees on either side of the road, but she strained to hear footsteps or perhaps oncoming cars.

Nothing.

“Yes, you’re a man. A buff example of one from the looks of the way your jeans and jacket fit. But you’re also something else.”

Something more.
